1984 by George Orwell

Hello everyone! This week I am going to relate food to relate food to the book 1984. If you have never read the book before, then it is about a guy named Winston who lives in a dystopian society. In his world, the government controls everything. They watch people through telescreens, change history, and vaporize anyone who might pose a threat to their power. The government is always telling the citizens that have more food than they every did. However, this is a lie. Winston feels as though he is the only one who notices. Winston describes his food as a “filthy liquid mess that has the appearance of vomit.” There were chunks of spongy pinkish stuff in his soup that was suppose to be meat. Obviously, food in his world is disgusting and unappetizing. Another thing that happened was that the government made an announcement that they had increased the amount of chocolate and tobacco when in reality they decreased it. This is common in communist countries. They usually don’t have enough to feed the citizens in their country. For example, in communist Russia, they often faced a shortage of goods. People had to stand in line for hours in hopes to get what they needed. Luckily, we don’t live such a world and we have good food.
