Hello everyone. 😀 This week, I am going to write about a current event that relates to food! Recently, there has been a recall for Blue Bell Ice Cream, yogurt, or any of their other products. This is due to the products being contaminated by a bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes. Listeriosis is a life-threatening infection that is especially dangerous to pregnant women, newborns, elders 65+, and people with weak immune systems. So far, three people have been reported to have died from listeria linked to Blue Bell Ice cream, and several illnesses have been reported. A Listeriosis infection can range from mild to severe. According to THIS website, only a few people who ingest Listeria fall ill or develop symptoms. Some of the mild symptoms include sudden a onset of fever, chills, severe headache, vomiting, and other influenza-type symptoms. However, if the infections grows more severe, then people may begin to sometimes show gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. In pregnant women, an infection can lead to premature labor, miscarriage, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth. However, if you live in California, you don’t have to worry about this because Blue Bell doesn’t sell their products here. Reports have mostly been made in Kansas, Texas, Arizona and Oklahoma. This is a somewhat odd case because Listeria cannot grow in freezing temperatures. The FDA is looking further into this case. This is just a warning to everyone out there, don’t EAT Blue Bell products until they fix this mess. Stay healthy everyone.
