Shopping in Communist countries is not fun. They lack the variety of goods and services that we take for granted here in the United States and pretty much all the other non dictatorship/communist countries in the world. The picture above is a picture of a supermarket in the Soviet Union around 1986. As you can see, there is not much in the meat department. The lady in the front looks dissatisfied with the options in front of her and so does everyone else around her. They are all frowning and looking at the food with sad eyes. This is a contrast to what you would usually see in an American supermarket. Normally, all the shelves are stocked and while customers might not be bursting with joy every time they walk into a supermarket, they don’t have a sense of gloominess around them either. Or if they do, it is not caused by the supermarket. In the picture, the poorly stocked supermarket is sort of a reflection into the nations economy. Usually, if the economy is doing well, then stores and the people reflect that by being happier and having more goods to sell. However, if something such as a natural disaster hits or the economy plumets, then stores aren’t as well maintained, the people are sad. In the Soviet Union, the stores were always like this and many people has frowns permanently etched into their faces. In the Soviet Union, the supermarkets were always like this, which goes to show that communism is like a natural disaster. It can destroy the economy and the general happiness the the people in the country.
Hello everyone! This week is AP testing week, SOOO much STRESS!!! You know what the best thing to do after taking an AP test? Go eat Sushi! Because that is exactly what I did after my AP calc test. I went to a place called Full Moon in Fountain Valley. It was so good and not too expensive either. I went with 4 other people, so 5 in total and it costs us about $66 which is about $13 per person. Sushi is a traditional dish that originated from Japan. It primarily consists of raw fish, rice, and seaweed. However, traditional sushi has the seaweed on the outside where as in America, the rice is put on the outside to make it look more appetizing to westerners. In America, you will find sushi that is stuffed with avocados, vegetables, and other condiments, but traditional sushi usually just has a slice of raw fish on top of rice. And, the fish used is incredibly fresh. That is why in Japan, it is custom to only put a slight dab of soy sauce or wasabi on the fish (not the rice) to enhance the taste because too much would muddle the flavor of the fish. So, whether you prefer traditional sushi or westernized sushi, it is a great option for after AP testing snack.
Hello everyone! This week I am going to relate food to relate food to the book 1984. If you have never read the book before, then it is about a guy named Winston who lives in a dystopian society. In his world, the government controls everything. They watch people through telescreens, change history, and vaporize anyone who might pose a threat to their power. The government is always telling the citizens that have more food than they every did. However, this is a lie. Winston feels as though he is the only one who notices. Winston describes his food as a “filthy liquid mess that has the appearance of vomit.” There were chunks of spongy pinkish stuff in his soup that was suppose to be meat. Obviously, food in his world is disgusting and unappetizing. Another thing that happened was that the government made an announcement that they had increased the amount of chocolate and tobacco when in reality they decreased it. This is common in communist countries. They usually don’t have enough to feed the citizens in their country. For example, in communist Russia, they often faced a shortage of goods. People had to stand in line for hours in hopes to get what they needed. Luckily, we don’t live such a world and we have good food.
Hello everyone. 😀 This week, I am going to write about a current event that relates to food! Recently, there has been a recall for Blue Bell Ice Cream, yogurt, or any of their other products. This is due to the products being contaminated by a bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes. Listeriosis is a life-threatening infection that is especially dangerous to pregnant women, newborns, elders 65+, and people with weak immune systems. So far, three people have been reported to have died from listeria linked to Blue Bell Ice cream, and several illnesses have been reported. A Listeriosis infection can range from mild to severe. According to THIS website, only a few people who ingest Listeria fall ill or develop symptoms. Some of the mild symptoms include sudden a onset of fever, chills, severe headache, vomiting, and other influenza-type symptoms. However, if the infections grows more severe, then people may begin to sometimes show gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. In pregnant women, an infection can lead to premature labor, miscarriage, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth. However, if you live in California, you don’t have to worry about this because Blue Bell doesn’t sell their products here. Reports have mostly been made in Kansas, Texas, Arizona and Oklahoma. This is a somewhat odd case because Listeria cannot grow in freezing temperatures. The FDA is looking further into this case. This is just a warning to everyone out there, don’t EAT Blue Bell products until they fix this mess. Stay healthy everyone.
Hello everyone! If you live in Fountain Valley, or go to FVHS, then you should already know this, but a 7 Leaves Cafe recently opened up. I’ve been there a few times myself, and I love it! They have a small menu made up of Teas, Coffees, and some snacks. When I go, I usually order some sort of Tea because it makes me feel healthy even though I know it’s not. But, it has the Tea name in it. Here is the link to their official website. It has a list of all the drinks they offer and a description of what each drink contains. This place has become super popular among the students at Fountain Valley High School. I see people go there before school and after school to get drinks or snacks. They also have a stamp card, where if you get 9 stamps ( aka buy 9 drinks) you get the 10th one for free! 😀 One of my favorite drinks is the Strawberry Hibiscus Tea. It has strawberry parts and a slice of lemon in it to make it healthier. There are also some other thing in it that I didn’t know what they were, but I ate them anyways. Then, later, I looked up what a Hibiscus is, and it turns out it is a flower. So… did I just eat a flower? 0-0′ Honestly, probably not, it didn’t look like a flower. The Cafe also has an option to add boba in it too for all you boba lovers. ❤
Hello everyone! Welcome back to another blog. As we all know, there are many different types of foods around the world that are unique to specific regions. This week, I am going to write about different types of food that are popular across the world. In South-east Asia, they have created a new type of wine called ‘Snake Wine.’ This wine is made by shoving a snake into white wine, or mixing body fluids from the snake into the wine. Sannakji is a traditional Korean dish that is also very popular in Korea. To make this dish, chefs cut up the octopus into small parts and serve it to customers while the octopus parts are still squirming around. It is important to chew thoroughly with this dish because the tentacles may suction to your throat and you could die.In Iceland, they serve a dish called Hákarl. This dish is made up of parts of a decomposed shark. The shark is buried to ferment in its own fluids for several months before being cut into strips to dry. A balus is very popular in the Philippians. It is basically a fertilized duck egg that contains a semi-developed duck fetus inside. I have actually tried this dish before and I think it taste good. I have only eaten the duck eggs that are about 2 weeks old, so I don’t really notice the developing duck because the form isn’t fully developed. There aren’t any feathers yet, so I don’t feel like I am eating a duck either. The third and final food I am about to talk about is fried spiders from Cambodia. It is a Cambodian delicacy and considered an acquired taste. The usual type of spider they use are the Tarantulas and it is served with lime and black pepper. There are many other foods out there, but this is all i am going to talk about. Cya next time!
I scream, You scream, We all scream for ice cream! YAYAY Hello everyone, and welcome back to another post about food! As you might have already noticed, this week’s post is going to be about foods to eat when it gets hot. Where I live, the weather is really weird, it can be hot one day then cold the next. And, if you have not already noticed, ice cream is one of the best ways to cool down in hot weather! My favorite flavors are cookies n’ cream and mint chocolate chip. Something I like to drink while it is super hot is boba! During the summer, I would walk down to Tastea to buy boba and popcorn chicken, or go to snow station and eat shredded ice, which is pretty similar to ice cream. Of course these aren’t the healthiest things to eat, so if you are interested in staying in shape, then here is a website that lists 8 healthy things you can eat in the summer that will also help keep you cool. Smoothies are also very good when it is hot, and fruit smoothies are not only healthy, but easy to make at home. Or, you could go to Jamba Juice and order one there. Starbucks is also very popular and they have lots of cold drinks too. There are many different foods/drinks and many places you could go to when the weather gets hot.
Food and movies go very well together. Many people love to eat while watching movies whether they are at the movie theater or at home. In fact, some people love food so much that they made it the subject of their movie. One of the most lovable food movies is Ratatouille.(Spoiler alert) The movie came out in 2007 and is about a rat named Remy, who wants to become a French Chef. His family is opposed to this, and it is also impossible for him to pursue this profession simply because he is a rat. One day, he meets a boy named Linguini, who can’t cook, and helps him by hiding under his chef hat. Together, they improve the restaurant’s reputation and a food critic comes by to find out what is going on. When the food critic arrives, he doesn’t order off the menu and tells them to “hit [him] with your best shot.” Remy decides to make Ratatouille, and they succeed in impressing the food critic. This movie is really good, and the plot includes some romance and family problems, but I didn’t mention it because it isn’t related to food. Ratatouille is actually a real dish that you can make at home. Here is a link to the recipe if you want to try it at home.
